What is this?

GunBoardSearch.com is a specialized tool for searching Internet gun forums.

Because?

Awhile back I began to get frustrated while searching Google for firearms-related information in that every time I began researching whatever it was I wanted to research, a sizeable chunk of the results were commercial enterprises trying make a buck. As a result I ended up getting very little of the information that I was looking for. I wanted information from people, not businesses that were trying to sell me something. Searching individual forums one at a time was certainly doable, but cumbersome and time consuming to say the least.

So in my frustration I created a customized Google search that only searched for the type of information I wanted. Then I figured that maybe others would like to use it to. So, I hammered out a simple interface, slapped on an ad to maybe help pay the hosting fees, and here you go. GunBoardSearch.com.

So you don't like business? Are you one of those Occupy X people?

Umm no. I'm all about legal commercial enterprise, and I'm all about capitalism. I'm also all about free choice and personal responsibility. So when I wasn't getting what I wanted, I didn't go about whining and crying that evil corporations were clogging up my search results and then go camp out at Google's front gate. I instead exercised my free will and solved my own problem. Now if I want information from people about a gun, I use this tool. If I want to find a business that will sell me a gun, I use standard Google.

Why shouldn't I just use Google?

You can. I'm not stopping you. But note that this IS Google, just restricted to only gun forums. I only made this for getting the information I wanted without a ton of hassle, then thought I'd share it. If you'd rather use Google proper, by all means please do so.

Are you tracking my searches?

No. Honestly, I don't think I could really get anything very meaningful. And even then I wouldn't know what to do with it if it did mean something. I could try to sell it to advertisers, but why? This is a pretty specific tool, so I don't think advertisers or market analysts will have a hard time figuring out the target audience. And even then, the only thing gun and gear companies could do with it is to figure out if their name is out there or not. But for that they could just use this tool and get better information anyway.

What's your angle?

My angle is two-fold. First, I use it. Second, see the ad? I'm hoping it'll pay for small portion of the hosting. But as anyone who has used ads like these knows, I shouldn't hold my breath. Ads depend on people clicking them, which for a small enterprise like this is not going to be very often. But it's there, so who knows. I may get a few cents per month if enough people are interested what's being advertised.

That's very altruistic of you.

Not really. As I said, I use it. And I use this server for a few other non-webpage things besides. ;-)

Something's wrong with the page or the search results!

Could happen. If you spot an issue, shoot me an email with the details and I'll investigate.

My gun forum isn't appearing. Can you add it?

Sure. Just drop me an email with your details and I'll see to it. Keep in mind however that once added it isn't me that ranks the search results, it's Google. So if your forum isn't turning up on the first page or something, well, that's something you'll have to take up with them.

I want my forum removed from the results.

No problem. Simply create a robots.txt file that directs the Googlebot to not index your site. Information on creating such a file can be found here. After a short time results from your site will begin disappearing.
